The hedgerows are cut back at planting and periodically pruned during cropping to prevent shading and to reduce competition with the associated food crops. The hedgerows are allowed to grow freely to cover the <a href=\"https:\/\/gro-ezy.com\/index.php\/encyclopedia\/land\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Before the invention of two-way ploughs soil could only be turned one way. For convenience fields were divided into sections called lands which were ploughed by going round and around turning the soil to the middle. Lands were sited in different places each year.\" class=\"encyclopedia\">land<\/a> when there are no crops (Kang et al., 1984). The alley cropping technique retains the basic features of the traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/gro-ezy.com\/index.php\/encyclopedia\/bush-fallow\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"A system of farming whereby the farmer cultivates on a piece of land for some years and later leave it for some years with the aim of restoring the fertility of the soil naturally. During the fallow period, the farmer cultivates another piece of land.
